Duncan Howitt-Marshall
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, History and Archaeology, Alexander S. Onassis Fellow
I am a specialist in maritime archaeology, Mediterranean prehistory, and the archaeology of islands. My research interests include the origins and development of seafaring, early coastal and island societies, maritime adaptations and social change in the Mesolithic/Epipalaeolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, and applied methodology in underwater archaeology.
I have taken part in a large number of terrestrial and underwater archaeological research projects across a broad temporal range from prehistoric to early modern periods in Cyprus, Greece, Sweden, and the British Isles, and directed my own maritime landscape project on the west coast of Cyprus (2002-2007). I have extensive experience in applied diver-deployed underwater survey and recording techniques, and take a keen interest in the archaeology of submerged prehistoric landscapes.
I was a member of the award-winning Cambridge University 'Naked Scientists' for two years (2009-2011), co-producing and presenting the monthly Naked Archaeology podcast. I have worked as a library research assistant at the British School at Athens, a project director at the Limassol-based Cyprus Society for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage (CYSUCH/THETIS), and an assistant tutor and administrator at the Nautical Archaeology Society in the UK. I hold degrees from the University of Exeter (BA Hons., 2001) and the University of Southampton (MA, 2003), and I am in the final stages of a PhD at the University of Cambridge on maritime culture and the archaeology of early Cyprus.
Supervisors: Dr. Simon Stoddart, Dr. Laura Preston, Prof. Charles French, and Prof. Giorgos Vavouranakis
