The study follows an approach based on the design research method and on procedural action research. The exploratory phase began with a review of literature on design management and models of strategy, eliciting a theoretical description of the ways in which design's contribution might be termed strategic.

As the claim of design's strategic importance is increasingly heard, we ask where does design fit in established strategy thinking? This paper documents a proposed conceptual model based on Porter's value chain model for strategic planning.

An integrated, holistic application of skilled design resources can make important contributions to competitive advantage. Identifying such contributions elicits a framework useful for clarifying the concept of ‘strategic design’ in general terms, and for describing design’s use in specific organisations. This paper presents such a framework and descriptions of two contrasting firms, based on interviews with designers and others in design-related roles in each. These demonstrate differing approaches to the use of design as a strategic resource, and how such a framework helps identify and describe them.

These measures are based around a simplified model of design as a system at a national level, developed through a workshop with government, industry and design sector representatives. Detailed data on design in the UK is presented to highlight the difficulties in collecting reliable and robust data. Evidence is compared with four countries (Spain, Canada, South Korea and Sweden). This comparison highlights the inherent difficulties in comparing performance and a revised set of measures is proposed.

This paper is a theoretical exploration of this claim, and of the meaning of design in the context of business strategy. Design's capabilities and influences, as recognised in the domain of design management, are related to the well-known, established strategy concepts. These include positioning and differentiation (Porter's value chain and five forces), views based on internal resources (knowledge, learning, ...

This technology also forms the basis of flexible electronics. Here we review the current status of flexible electronics and attempt to predict the future promise of these pervading technologies in healthcare, environmental monitoring, displays and human-machine interactivity, energy conversion, management and storage, and communication and wireless networks.
