Tosi had almost simultaneously prepared and published an edition of the 'Paenitentiale Ambros... more Tosi had almost simultaneously prepared and published an edition of the 'Paenitentiale Ambrosianum'-a regrettable duplication that manuscript librarians should surely help to obviate with an elaborate historical commentary, in Archivum Bobiense xii/xiii (i 990-1). The differences between the two editions are minor, although Tosi provides headings, which he believes to have been lost in transmission, for the concluding sections. The two scholars' characterisations of the text as a whole are, however, very different, Tosi suggesting that it is the 'genuine Penitential of Columbanus'. Scepticism is certainly in order here. Even so, his hypothesis should not be rejected out of hand: but future discussion is likely to proceed from Korntgen's text, if only because of its wider availability.
