Many investigations into improving levels of digital media literacy have focused on the technology itself and the skill level of users. Traditional media has long been a source of information for people and yet little investigation has been conducted into using traditional media such as magazines for improving digital media literacy levels in a non-intrusive way. As traditional media is still an important way to disseminate information and while Australians continue to be high consumers of print magazines, it seemed a logical progression to investigate as a starting point whether technology is discussed or visually present within the pages of some of our highest circulating magazines. The focus of this paper is on a Nintendo advertorial printed in The Australian Women's Weekly (AWW) in November 2010. The advertorial offered insights into six Australian womens' experiences of using a Nintendo during a demonstration day. Combining aspects of digital media literacy with potential literacy tools of magazines, this paper considers the advertorial as part of a non-intrusive educative approach to increasing digital media literacy through promotional messages.

The change to a digital environment for Australian families is more than simply adopting internet connectivity or a mobile phone. Moving from an analog environment and into a digital sphere for many individuals is confronting: the transition requires digital media literacy, that is an understanding of devices, forms of connectivity, installation of devices and how best to use digital connectivity to connect with other family members. In this Australian study the interviewees revealed that tensions occur between middle and older adults as both generations try to understand the effect of the change to a digital environment on each other and navigate the best path that enables communication and connection between family members. This paper will primarily draw on the interviews held with middle adult John and his mother Vera 1 .

In terms of volume of production, aluminum is the world's leading nonferrous metal. Because of its lightness and unique physical and chemical properties, its suitability for the construction of aircraft was recognized early this century. With the development of aluminum and its alloys as a construction material, the need arose for stable and resistant surface finishes. Surface finishing techniques developed rapidly in both Europe and the US. Today, several important classes of finishes are used. The Australian War Memorial (AWM) has an extensive collection of aluminum aircraft, which illustrate the development of aluminum alloys as structural materials and the associated coating technologies, especially oxide conversion coatings. In museums, it has been observed that these finishes have, to a large extent, been ignored, to the detriment of objects, their history, and conservation in general. These coatings can offer important historical and technical information. As intrinsic parts of the object, every effort should be made to devise conservation strategies to retain them. Further, it is only through an understanding of the construction of an object and its deterioration that appropriate treatments can be developed. Methods of categorization and analysis developed and used at the AWM are discussed, along with the reproduction of various coatings from the original formulations, conservation strategies, and a discussion of the relevance of surface coatings studies to the museum.

Coastal Urban Climate Futures in South East Australia from Wollongong to Lakes Entrance is an investigation into possible coastal urban futures to 2030 and beyond. The study focus is on coastal adaptation in the context of climate change. It is broad in its scope by considering environmental, social and economic change in the south east coastal region. It has a multi-disciplinary approach to the spatial and temporal dimension in considering action on the ground. It involves seven local government areas (Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla, Bega and East Gippsland), two states and several regional organisations and explores some of the critical governance issues. The research uses a range of methods, including a review of peer-reviewed journal articles and government reports, local case studies, targeted focus groups and fieldwork. The time horizon is to 2030 but longer time frames have been considered where appropriate. An important dimension is the interdisciplinary approach. The outcome is an integrated framework for describing what a climate adapted coastal community may be like in 2030.

Planners play a critical role in shaping the communities in which we all live, making them more liveable, sustainable and vibrant places. Increasingly the
planning profession is involved in multi-disciplinary responses to changing urban form and effective frameworks for private sector investment. Innovations
in urban infrastructure planning, urban management and capital city strategic planning are emerging national priorities. The ACT region provides an
immediate ‘urban and regional observatory’ for students to examine contemporary planning issues. Included in these proceedings are a number of key
papers that provide insights into the changing landscape of tertiary education and local government and planning across various states.
