The first part is devoted to more general and holistic questions of the research process (research ethics, finding and formulating research questions) and to concrete research techniques and methods (fieldnotes, interviews, photographs). The second part presents particular examples of handling both (conceptual and methodological dilemmas and practical techniques) and it does so with examples of empirically located cases from field research (the socially excluded locality of Haviřov-Sumbark, the memory of Roma workers, the realization of the exhibition Khatar san? in public space).

Cizinci v Brně: Vztahy, vazby a sítě podpory, 2018

Registrační týden) a výběr 50 rodin do intervenční a 100 rodin do kontrolní skupiny; - vzdělávání terénního týmu poskytujícího podporu v bytech v sociální práci zaměřené na silné stránky klienta pionýry přístupu Housing First v Holandsku organizací HVO Querido Discus.; - zabydlení 50 rodin do bytů; - komplexní sociální práce s rodinami v bytech; - pravidelná setkávání stakeholderů (politické a odborné reprezentace); - evaluace včetně randomizovaného kontrolovaného experimentu.

S " mladou nastupující generací " se obvykle pojí zhruba čtyři významy (příběhy) většinou propojené s tradičními přístupy evropanů k dějinám a sociální změně – optimistickým (progresivním), eschatologickým, pesimistickým (degresivním) a ne-lineárním.

We present the quantitative data from a mixed-methods design. Homeless families with at least one child under 18, residing in Brno, Czechia were recruited for an open-label pragmatic randomized controlled trial. Families were stratified by number of children and randomized by lottery. Fifty treatment families received intensive case management, housing in municipal flats, and a risk-fund. One hundred control families received services as usual. Structured interviews were conducted at baseline, and six and twelve months after move‒in. For statistical analysis, we used a non-parametric Fisher's exact test for binary variables, a Mann–Whitney U test for categorical and continuous variables, and a parametric negative binomial model for count variables. Treatment families had less homelessness (0, 2 months vs. 11 months) in the year after move-in, were twice as likely to have secure tenure, and showed lower psychological distress. The treatment cut annual emergency room visits in half, ambulance use by three fourths, and hospitalizations by two thirds. This intervention led to greater improvements in health outcomes than previous interventions involving families experiencing homelessness.

The aim is to define questions that need to be addressed before research with this vulnerable and diverse group can be considered so that the threat of inflicting further harm is mitigated and the possible positive impact of research is increased. We outline and compare the merits and possible drawbacks of three different approaches to research with gender-based violence survivors. Methods We compare the ethical/methodological rationale and approaches used in three different projects employing mixed-method exploratory research, survivor-centered qualitative interview-based research and experimental research through practices from the theatre of the oppressed. The comparison centers on showing the relative advantages of individual approaches in terms of ethics in practice. Results The individual studies and their comparison confirm the ongoing salience of ethical considerations outlined by, e.g., proponents of feminist participatory action research; our findings also underline the necessity of considering the social contexts of violence and the need to adjust research design to ethics. Conclusions Our study shows that using research designs that do not lead to direct empowerment of survivors should only be considered after other options have been tried and proven inefficient. Ethical considerations need to be holistic, focusing on preventing further harm and paying attention to the social contexts of violence and the impact of representing the research results.

To better understand the obduracy of the current housing system, we examine the major barriers and threats to the implementation of such projects through a series of workshops with non-experts in selected cities. Our findings suggest that the housing system's obduracy is related to social imaginaries that we conceptualise as the 'imaginary of social inertia'. This form of imaginary, along with other factors such as a lack of supporting legal and financial infrastructures, creates a complex network of obstacles that reduce the likelihood of such housing projects gaining ground. In conclusion, our research emphasises the role of imaginaries in studying obduracy and thus provides valuable insights into the processes of urban sociotechnical change.

In the Czech Republic, we recently identified the first efforts of some municipalities and smaller groups of citizens to transpose this ‘housing innovation’ into the Czech context, which until now has predominantly favoured individual owner-occupied housing. Considering that these emerging forms of housing in the Czech Republic have yet to be conceptualised in theory, the goal of our article is to initiate a debate on a more precise conceptual understanding. To this end, we propose an overarching definition of participatory housing, which we present using three defining principles and five dimensions of participation. Reflecting on existing Western European conceptualisations and a historical contextualisation of (related forms of) housing in the territory of what is today the Czech Republic, we discuss the specific dimensions of the concept of participatory housing, the conditions of its existence, and what makes it distinct from other forms of housing.

Zvrátím hlavu dozadu a vzpomínám.

It at the same time seeks to refine the usage of the ‘urban assemblages’ concept in sociological and anthropological research. A Rapid Re-Housing project was piloted in Brno in 2016–2018. Its objective was to house 50 families in need of housing in municipal apartments and to provide social support in the form of intensive case management. The project included a randomised controlled trial and a qualitative evaluation. This research showed that the effects of the intervention were positive for the vast majority of indicators monitored, with some of the intervention families experiencing significant changes in their financial situation. Discussing the effects of the Brno ‘housing first assemblage’ we respond to the reservations that have been voiced about the practice of housing First programmes. We base our responses here on empirical data and the concept of ‘relations of exteriority’ and show that even projects based on solving ‘only one component’ can initiate broader socio-material transformations of contemporary societies.

Some theorists have in response begun calling for the provision of more public housing or less housing financialisation (free market). The goal of our article is to demonstrate the housing attitudes of Czech millennials towards state interventions that are designed to address the decline in housing affordability, using a quantitative attitude survey and a series of qualitative interviews. The results of our study reveal that young Czechs are sceptical about increased public housing provision as a solution, and on the whole their views align more with the neoliberal ideas, the very ideas that are criticised by critical theorists. We show that there are contextual reasons that explain why young Czechs are not calling for radical policy change - reasons such as familialism, which facilitates the intergenerational transmission of norms, habitus, and resources within families; the legacy of socialism and society transformation; a belief that more redistribution of resources could be unfair; and stronger support for competition, individualism and right-wing politics. There is also, however, some inconsistency and uncertainty in their attitudes, especially between their general worldview and their suggestions for concrete action. This study contributes to the research in the field of youth studies that looks at young people’s strategies for dealing with the problem of decreasing housing affordability, and to the discussions surrounding diverse housing policy responses to a common global challenge.

The project represents an evidence-based social innovation focused on ending families' homelessness. The research was designed as a Randomised Controlled Trial study accompanied by a qualitative evaluation. The data were collected through questionnaires, individual interviews, and focus groups. In the results section we follow the logic of a financial stability model and conclude that research results on financial stability overall did not prove to be statistically significant on a short-term scale. In the discussion, we state that prolonged material poverty combined with the nature of the Czech housing benefit system and the experience of residential alienation could increase the risk of the recurrence of homelessness for families. A crisis financial fund was established in an effort to prevent this.
Petr Kubala provides an exegesis of the preparation and realization of the exhibitions that were among the main components of ‘The Memory of Roma Workers’ project. Kubala enables the readers to take a look into the processes of negotiation and realization of the exhibition, both in the material and the conceptual sense, showing how the two are interconnected. The multi-layered structure of the exhibition’s realization is mirrored in the multi-layered nature of Kubala’s text, which winds through the goals and questions of its conceptual, empirical and interpretative character. Kubala focuses on the process of meaning creation throughout the exhibition’s realization. However, meaning not only unfolds within the interaction between the authors and the audience but its context also includes ‘different people, their stories, identities and ideas, things, material environments, regulations or institutions – co-created this exhibition and its meaning’.

New target groups bring new demands on the knowledge base – to date, there has not been any Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) on family HF intervention. This protocol describes the design of a Czech single-site demonstration of RCT with a treatment group of 50 families and presents results of statistical compliance testing of the treatment and control group at baseline. This project is a pragmatic, mixed methods, single-site field trial of the effectiveness of Housing First in Brno, Czech Republic randomised 150 participant homeless families, stratified by number of children, into treatment and control groups. Quantitative outcome measures are collected over a 12-month period and a qualitative process evaluation is being completed. Primary outcomes being measured include a decrease in time the family spent homeless, improvement in security of tenure, improvement of mental health of mothers, and decrease in the use of emergency health services.

Immigration is directed mainly to larger cities, and Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic. In the narratives of local immigration experts, which are subsequently transferred to the public space, the classification that distinguishes two basic categories of foreigners is widely used. The desirable highly skilled workforce contrasts with other foreigners whose economic benefits are suppressed. The highly skilled migration population are known as expatriates, which is used without theoretical reflection and empirical verification. The main aim of the text is to determine whether the term expatriates can be applied in the case of Brno. Findings from the secondary analysis did not help in this. The data on which we developed the theoretical discussion comes from our online survey entitled The Great Brno Expat Survey conducted among people from abroad with those who have actual experience with living in the South Moravian Region. The exploratory research itself and the effort to exclude “real” expatriates from its broad framework resulted in the finding that only 15% of respondents in our sample meet the definition of expatriates. The subsequent analysis of latent classes indicated that relatively few respondents appear in the category that is in line with the definition of “Expat” – approximately only a quarter. We therefore decided to propose our own solution – a new typology that would be more in line with social reality. Analysis of the latent classes showed three basic types and demonstrated the importance of the social ties of immigrants. Categorization cannot be construed as definitive, but situational.

This article is based on qualitative in-depth interviews conducted in the four cities most affected by the house and rent price increase. The general question addresses if and how social inequalities, sharpened by the current housing affordability crisis, affect the process of narrative life course coherence creation (the connection of past, present, and future) in relation to an orientation toward a vision of “the good life.” We furthermore complement the already existing ideal types of the young adult’s relation toward time— confident continuity and cautious contingency (Nielsen A (2019a) Levels of intersecting temporalities in young men’s orientation to the future. A cross-national case comparison. Time & Society 0(0): 1–22)—with two other two types— cautious continuity and total contingency—defined on the basis of our data. We argue that the ability of young adults to envision a coherent future is related to the feeling of secured housing and that the idea of the good life is depicted to a large extent through the ideal of homeownership, although the precarity of the housing market makes homeownership harder to reach for those from unprivileged backgrounds.

Whereas many studies have focused on the shift of responsibility for housing from the state to individuals related to a meritocratic ideology, only recently have certain studies identified the ambiguity and incoherence as a significant principle in housing discourses. Responding to these, we analysed 31 narrative interviews and survey data on Czech young adults (aged 18-35), providing unique evidence from a country where access to the housing market is significantly, albeit gradually, worsening. Our focus is on who they ascribe responsibility for housing provision, demonstrating how their strong calls for state intervention intermingle with a belief that individual solutions to the housing crisis are still possible. We illustrate how this ambivalent dual responsibilization is overcome through a complex interplay between moralities, rationalities and, importantly, through reference to emotions and the practices of intergenerational transfers which normalize the attachment to existing housing practices, ideologies and responsibilities.

The highly skilled migration population are known as expatriates, which is used without theoretical reflection and empirical verification. The main aim of the text is to determine whether the term expatriates can be applied in the case of Brno. Findings from the secondary analysis did not help in this. The data on which we developed the theoretical discussion comes from our online survey entitled The Great Brno Expat Survey conducted among people from abroad with those who have actual experience with living
in the South Moravian Region. The exploratory research itself and the effort to exclude “real” expatriates from its broad framework resulted in the finding that only 15% of respondents in our sample meet the definition of expatriates. The subsequent analysis of latent classes
indicated that relatively few respondents appear in the category that is in line with the definition of “Expat” – approximately only a quarter. We therefore decided to propose our own solution – a new typology that would be more in line with social reality. Analysis of the latent classes showed three basic types and demonstrated the importance of the social ties of immigrants. Categorization cannot be construed as definitive, but situational.
