Admission to the Ph.D. programme is normally made on the basis of an interview of eligible candidates conducted by the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME), through its Centre Research Committee (CRC). The CRC may decide to conduct a written test as well, or multiple interviews, or other ways of testing, in order to screen the best suitable candidates. Applications are invited from candidates by advertising in IIT-Delhi web portals in March for the first semester and in October for the second semester every year.
Core research areas in the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) include:
Bioinstrumentation
Focuses on the development of complex biomechatronic and biomedical systems that incorporate diverse sensing paradigms, electronics, ultrasound imaging, signal processing, embedded hardware, and software to better understand human movement, neuromuscular disorders, and chronic disability in general.
Biomaterials
The biomaterials group integrated the concepts and skills from chemistry, materials science, and biology to design, synthesize, characterize, evaluate, and validate next-generation biomaterials to make a translational impact on improving human health.
Biomechanics
Biomechanics group is a team of multi-disciplinary researchers with expertise in diagnostics, experiments and testing, design and simulation of biological systems, and healthcare products development. The aim of this group is to understand the biomechanics of the human body through simulation and experiments.
Medical Imaging
Working towards developing new analysis and post-processing methodologies for quantitative biomedical imaging that could be beneficial to the much wider clinical community.
Medical Implants
The Medical Implants research group works for the development of indigenous medical devices to serve the Indian population. It focuses on developing affordable solutions for healthcare through a synergy of cutting-edge engineering and medicine.

Prime Minister's Research Fellowship
Under the PMRF scheme (https://pmrf.in/), Indian students of high merit who have completed their bachelor's degree, or pursuing their master's or Ph.D. degrees in top Indian institutions may be considered for a merit-based premier scholarship. Potential candidates are encouraged to apply under this scheme and seek details on the website. There is also a “lateral entry” option into PMRF for students who join the Ph.D. program and demonstrate academic excellence within the first few semesters of their residence in the Ph.D. program.
International Ph.D. Fellowship Program (IPFP)
IIT Delhi, as a part of its Institution of Eminence (IoE) initiatives, is moving rapidly to welcome meritorious candidates for pursuing Ph.D. from other countries. As part of this, International students wanting to pursue Ph.D. degree at IIT Delhi (who are not availing a scholarship from any other source) are entitled to a merit-based fellowship under the International Ph.D. Fellowship Programme (IPFP). More information on this scheme and other details for international students are available from the International PG Admission Website, click here.
