Dhuoda, duchess of Septimania, seems to have understood the state of spirituality in the Carolin... more Dhuoda, duchess of Septimania, seems to have understood the state of spirituality in the Carolingian Empire, the instrument of salvation for all its people was in a serious state of moral and spiritual decay, affecting not only the Carolingian church but its political institutions as well. This article attempts to show how Dhuoda, in her manual and its numerous references to monastic ideals, properly manipulated and tailored them to meet the needs of her son William's social and political realities.

This paper is an attempt to underscore her significant contribution and to study her sources to highlight her vast erudition.
