Bike and Scooter

ASU is a gold-level Bicycle Friendly University, as designated by the League of American Bicyclists.

ASU Parking and Transit Services offers multiple services to assist Sun Devils who commute to campus on a bicycle. Watch the Bike ASU video to learn more.

All ASU students, faculty and staff who bring a bicycle to campus are required to register it with ASU at a bike valet location or online. Learn more about the registration process in the bike registration section.

Bicycle and scooter commuting is easy. Use the bicycling link in the search box on Google Maps to get directions that include bicycle lanes found throughout Maricopa County.

You can combine your bicycle or scooter commute with your bus or light rail ride. Valley Metro bus and light rail commuters can place their bicycle on the racks provided at the front of the transit vehicle. Racks are first-come, first-serve. If room permits on Valley Metro light rail trains, passengers can bring their bicycles on board. Passengers can bring their folded scooters on board and place it under the seat. Scooters powered by fuel or batteries with exposed terminals are not permitted.

Valley Metro buses have racks to hold two bicycles. To load a bicycle on the rack:

1. Pull up on the handle to lower the rack.
2. Place bicycle on the open slot nearest the bus.
3. Pull the wheel hook out and over your tire as close to the frame as possible.

The Sun Devil Fitness Complex

• To enter, commuters must first complete a form and an ASU ID must be presented each time before entering the facility.

​​Wrigley Hall

• The first-floor restroom hours are from 6 a.m.–11 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Weekend hours are 8 a.m.–6 p.m. 
• To enter, students and employees must use their ASU ID to gain access. There is also a disabled-accessible push pad that will open the door after access is granted.

Bring your own toiletries and towel; be considerate of others by cleaning up after yourself.

Shared paths On the Tempe campus, shared paths are located on Forest and Goldwater Mall and along the south sidewalk on University Drive. These markings indicate paths where pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles may share the same lane at the same time.
Shared lane markings  Bicyclists commuting to and from campus may notice shared lane markings on public roadways. When bicyclists encounter these markings, they may use the same lane as vehicular traffic. Bicyclists may also notice "Bicycles may use full lane" signage reminding all commuters that bicycles have access to the full lane.
Bicycle boxes Bicycle boxes are located at intersections with traffic signals to provide a clear and visible area for bicyclists to stop ahead of vehicles. These road markings offer bicyclists priority when at a signaled intersection to activate the stoplight sensor and either go right, straight or left ahead of vehicular traffic.

ASU Surplus sells used bikes and scooters during specific times of the year. 

Walk-only zones enhance pedestrian safety and ease vehicle congestion. From 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday through Friday, no one may drive, park or ride wheeled vehicles in walk-only zones.

Accessories and gear

Personal bicycle safety and theft prevention are important. The ASU Police Department recommends using a U-lock along with a cable lock to help prevent your bicycle from being stolen. Never use only a cable lock.

Use high-quality safety and security items, including headlights and U-locks.

Parking and Transit Services sells bicycle headlights and locks at 50% off the retail price.

• Headlight and tail light set: $15.
• U-lock with cable: $25.

Purchase lights and locks at any campus PTS office. Registered bicyclists may purchase a U-lock for $20. Limit one.

To help prevent theft:

• Always lock your bicycle or scooter to a rack, within a card-access bicycle parking facility or leave it at an attended valet station.
• Do not lock your bicycle or scooter to an unsecured object.
• Register your bicycle with ASU, even if your bicycle is registered with another program or law enforcement agency.
• Report suspicious behavior by using one of the blue-light emergency call boxes on campus or call 480-965-3456. If it occurs off-campus, contact the appropriate police agency.
• Secure the U-lock through the bicycle frame, the rear wheel and the bicycle rack.

If your bicycle or scooter is stolen while on campus, report the theft immediately to the ASU Police Department at 480-965-3456. If it is stolen while off-campus, contact the appropriate police agency.

Registered bicyclists can receive a free emergency ride home.

Being a sustainable Sun Devil by biking or riding a scooter to campus helps ASU achieve its university sustainability goals for transportation. If you have a personal emergency, Parking and Transit Services is here to assist. 

Call PTS dispatch at 480-965-6124 any day the university is open and ask for our emergency ride-home service. All registered bicyclists may take advantage of a free ride home up to two times each permit year. When you call have your ASU ID number and bike registration ready. After PTS has verified you are a registered bicyclist they will help you arrange for a free ride home using Lyft.
