Md. Maidul Islam
Maidul Islam is a dedicated Associate Professor on study leave from the Department of Sociology at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. With over twelve years of teaching experience in Bangladesh, he has contributed significantly to the field of sociology across multiple institutions. Currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh, his research interests encompass a broad spectrum of sociological inquiry.
His earlier work delved into political Islam, secularism, family dynamics in late modernity, and the social dynamics of Muslim Dalits in Bangladesh. Presently, he focuses on the intersection of the prison system and state apparatus in Bangladesh, examining their impact on democracy and human rights. His academic pursuits are driven by a profound curiosity about how colonial cultural legacies perpetuate authoritarian tendencies within societies, potentially transforming them into what he terms a "prison state."
Maidul Islam holds an M. Phil. degree from the Department of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, where his research concentrated on ethnicity and minorities in South Asia, the evolving concept of the Post-Familial Family, sociology of social movements, and issues of development and subalternity. His scholarly trajectory now extends towards emerging interests in Post-Modern Sociology, Human Rights, Democracy, social movements, Prison Studies, time and memory.
Supervisors: I completed my M.Phil. under the supervision of Professor Abhijit Dasgupta at the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. Currently, and I am pursuing my Ph.D. at the Department of Sociology in the University of Pittsburgh.
