D’autres discours sont possibles : la poésie et son poids de silence, la chronique qui renonce aux belles phrases et au nom d’auteur . Mais l’envers même de la parole à la première personne, c’est l’architecture : certes elle s’accompagne toujours d’un discours, mais son but est d’organiser la matière et ce qu’elle dit alors, elle le dit sans le dire. Et c’est ainsi qu’elle témoigne silencieusement de la catastrophe, tout en laissant la parole aux victimes. Dans la catastrophe, elle a tenu ou elle s’est écroulée pour des raisons qui tiennent aussi bien à elle qu’à ce qu’elle a subi. C’est évident dans le cas d’un tremblement de terre, d’un tsunami ou d’une explosion nucléaire ; cela devrait l’être aussi dans le cas d’un accident civil sans explosion nucléaire, tel que Tchernobyl et Fukushima. Il semble qu’aux alentours tout reste en place, que le désastre est celui de radiations invisibles. Pourtant, c’est bien alors que l’architecture est centrale. Elle est celle d’une centrale, une centrale nucléaire, ou ce que l’on nomme en anglais power station, la station étant ce qui est censé se tenir là mais en même temps n’a pas tenu. C’est pourquoi je me concentrerai sur cette architecture dans la catastrophe, en fonction d’un double objectif, ou d’une double résistance. D’un côté, il s’agit de résister au catastrophisme, selon lequel ce qui nous attend, c’est la fin du monde, sans plus rien à faire et à construire. Temps perdu que le travail admet en l'encadrant, il peut bien trouver sa place dans le programme d'un colloque. Mais cependant, en évoquant ce délassement-là, nous prenons un risque. Car celui qui, par lapsus, déclare la séance close au moment de son ouverture, peut encore se faire pardonner, non seulement son mot, mais encore son désir. Pourtant, on trouve bien chez Hegel comme dans la nature les traces dissimulées de quelques oeuvres animales : des tanières, des gîtes, des nids. Faut-il voir en ces traces une préfiguration de l'oeuvre humaine ? L'homme se lie-t-il de cette manière à la vie animale ? Hegel répond en définissant l'oeuvre animale avant tout par son manque, sa tendance à ne pas être. Cette oeuvre n'acquiert d'être véritable que par l'homme, le maître artistique de la figure animale. Le jugement se passe ici de cette médiation qu'est l'enquête ; il saisit le délit dans le plus proche des présents, si bien que celui-ci n'a pas d'autre histoire que celle de son jugement. Cette expression-très récente, dans le contexte juridique français-permet de prendre une distance, tout aussi immédiate, avec le procès de la reconnaissance. Car celui-ci est, par définition, une médiation. Voyons la Phénoménologie de Hegel : la seule conscience immédiate, c'est la certitude sensible, qui ne reconnaît rien, mais affirme naïvement l'être de son objet. Il faut tout un trajet expérimental pour que cette affirmation se perde, pour que la conscience se réfléchisse comme la cause même de cette perte, et pour qu'elle s'apparaisse comme conscience de soi, conscience dédoublée et relation identitaire à un autre que soi. Ensuite ce lien prend la consistance d'un « nous », qui médiatise la relation entre différentes consciences. Cette vérité n'a pas besoin d'être élue, elle n'est pas un héritage, on ne peut à vrai dire la commémorer, parce qu'elle est en 2008 ou en 2009 ce qu'elle était en 1968, la vérité de la démocratie. Ainsi commence le numéro 4 de la revue Aléa, qui a pour thème « la communauté, le nombre » et qui occupe une place si singulière dans la pensée de la communauté et de son désoeuvrement 2. Nous ne prétendons pas refaire ce calcul. Mais ce que nous voudrions faire ici, c'est bien nous recompter. Combien sommes-nous ? N'est-ce pas la question que l'on se pose quand, après bien des efforts pour se fixer un programme commun, on en vient à la première vraie réunion ? On ne sait exactement qui est là, ni pourquoi : on reconnaît près de l'estrade des fondateurs, au fond de la salle des reconvertis, et disséminés, des sceptiques, des curieux, quelques contradicteurs, sans doute un ou deux indicateurs. La question « qui sommes-nous » est cependant mise en suspens, car la vraie question, à cette minute, est bien de savoir combien nous sommes. Combien sommes-nous donc ? Ce contraire sans noblesse du travail n'a pas le sérieux du loisir, temps de la formation de soi qui culmine dans une pensée non productive et pour cette raison même consacrée à la vérité et au bien. Il n'a pas, cela va sans dire, la teneur existentielle du désoeuvrement. Il a même quelque chose d'aliénant, quand le travail ne laisse plus d'énergie à consacrer au loisir. Temps perdu que le travail admet en l'encadrant, il peut bien trouver sa place dans le programme d'un colloque. Mais cependant, en évoquant ce délassement-là, nous prenons un risque. Car celui qui, par lapsus, déclare la séance close au moment de son ouverture, peut encore se faire pardonner, non seulement son mot, mais encore son désir. Mais celui qui, au milieu de la séance, propose un délassement impromptu, voit planer sur lui la menace de Pascal : « Qui délasse hors de propos, il lasse ». Nous ne prendrions cependant pas ce risque si ce n'était pour quelqu'un, en hommage à quelqu'un, à savoir Derrida. Car pardelà tous les débats sur le manque de sérieux de la déconstruction, Derrida s'est toujours présenté explicitement comme se volant sa propre parole, se l'appropriant à tort pour un temps toujours trop long, et proposant sans assurance une pensée située à l'extrême, ou à la limite, du sérieux. Ses derniers mots écrits nous demandent de sourire. Et ses premiers mots peuvent être, au début d'une conférence : « Pardon, oui, pardon » ; ou encore, au début d'un séminaire: « c'est assez dire » 1. C'est assez dire, c'est un c, passons au délacement. Ce dernier consiste à dénouer des lacets ; il tente plus généralement de se défaire d'un noeud, de distinguer autant que possible ce qui se mêle, s'entrelace. Il consiste à analyser. Le délacement semble donc au plus loin du délassement, car l'analyse semble n'avoir jamais été autre chose qu'un travail. Pourtant, à y bien réfléchir, l'analyse se situe précisément à la limite du sérieux dans la recherche de la vérité. Elle se doit toujours de considérer chaque problème comme déjà résolu, chaque objet comme déjà trouvé, chaque parole comme déjà dite ; dès lors, il devient extrêmement difficile de distinguer l'analyse frivole, qui ne fait que retrouver ce qu'elle a présupposé, et l'analyse réelle, qui découvre des éléments et des détails nouveaux. Travail de différenciation, l'analyse n'en finit plus de justifier la teneur des différences qu'elle dégage, jusqu'à faire vaciller la possibilité même de maîtriser la différence.

Celui-ci la frôle à peine, sa vivacité (Lebhaftigkeit) l'éloigne de la vitalité (Lebendigkeit). L'on s'attendrait donc à ce qu'il vive sans oeuvre. Pourtant, on trouve bien chez Hegel comme dans la nature les traces dissimulées de quelques oeuvres animales : des tanières, des gîtes, des nids. Faut-il voir en ces traces une préfiguration de l'oeuvre humaine ? L'homme se lie-t-il de cette manière à la vie animale ? Hegel répond en définissant l'oeuvre animale avant tout par son manque, sa tendance à ne pas être. Cette oeuvre n'acquiert d'être véritable que par l'homme, le maître artistique de la figure animale. Mais même ainsi, elle reste en retrait de l'oeuvre véritablement humaine, spirituelle, inscrite dans le développement d'une vie éthique universelle. Il découle de cette réponse que la vie de l'individu, non seulement vivant, mais humain, est emportée par l'oeuvre animale dans son retrait. Hegel ne donne qu'une place négative, déceptive, à l'idée, dominante à son époque, que l'on puisse faire de sa vie individuelle sa propre oeuvre : si l'oeuvre animale préfigure la vie de l'individu humain, c'est comme la part manquée de son existence.

Le jugement se passe ici de cette médiation qu'est l'enquête ; il saisit le délit dans le plus proche des présents, si bien que celui-ci n'a pas d'autre histoire que celle de son jugement. Cette expression-très récente, dans le contexte juridique français-permet de prendre une distance, tout aussi immédiate, avec le procès de la reconnaissance. Car celui-ci est, par définition, une médiation. Voyons la Phénoménologie de Hegel : la seule conscience immédiate, c'est la certitude sensible, qui ne reconnaît rien, mais affirme naïvement l'être de son objet. Il faut tout un trajet expérimental pour que cette affirmation se perde, pour que la conscience se réfléchisse comme la cause même de cette perte, et pour qu'elle s'apparaisse comme conscience de soi, conscience dédoublée et relation identitaire à un autre que soi. Ensuite ce lien prend la consistance d'un « nous », qui médiatise la relation entre différentes consciences. Ce « je qui est un nous », ce « nous qui est un je » est la clef même de toute médiation, que l'on nomme ensuite celle-ci esprit, Dieu, ou tribunal. Le tribunal hégélien se fonde ainsi sur la reconnaissance, il est son assomption légale. Et par suite, il n'exerce aucune action immédiate : il est, par définition, ce qui médiatise le nous et le je, l'universalité des lois et la singularité du suspect. Cette médiation devient, concrètement, l'enquête qui établit les faits, la peine qui nie le délit. Elle n'a de certitude et d'immédiateté que dans la présence flagrante du juge. Dans son acception purement juridique, la comparution immédiate rompt simplement avec la médiation : elle ne reconnaît pas le coupable, elle ne lui laisse pas le temps de reconnaître le juge. Son seul enjeu, absolument naïf, non-critique, se réduit à la certitude sensible du délit, à la saisie d'un présent déjà passé : comme si le délit, laissant en marge la relation entre le juge et le suspect, pouvait comparaître lui-même au tribunal : étrange et fausse visibilité d'une faute qui accentue de fait le choc invisible du singulier et de la loi. Mais la construction d'une scène ou d'un espace juridique, qui isole l'accusé, montre déjà en creux que les êtres singuliers sont immédiatement plusieurs. Ainsi s'ouvre le champ d'une autre comparution immédiate, soeur ennemie de la première, en tant qu'elle fait vaciller l'assurance du pouvoir juridique. Quand les êtres singuliers apparaissent ensemble, ils n'ont pas à assumer quelque faute collective, mais plutôt à rendre compte du fait, flagrant, de leur existence même. Et ils se présentent, non devant un tribunal qui s'oppose à eux comme le juge s'oppose à l'accusé, mais devant eux-mêmes, comme seuls juges immédiats de leur existence. Cette mise en présence du « nous » n'en garde pas moins une distance vis-à-vis de la reconnaissance. Le fait est que nous ne pouvons plus attendre le procès de la reconnaissance, la lente constitution du nous et le jugement du tribunal, quand il s'agit pour nous de nous juger nous-mêmes. Cette immédiateté du nous et cette urgence du jugement se soude dans ce que Nancy nomme « comparution ». Nous aimerions montrer ici que la comparution interrompt le procès de la reconnaissance sans le rompre, qu'il le reconnaît en s'en distanciant.

La pensée très élaborée de Jean-Luc Nancy sur ce sujet est reprise mais aussi continuée au cours d'une discussion où Jérôme Lèbre s'interroge avec lui sur la meilleure manière de saisir l'engagement du corps sensible dans l'activité artistique et l'approche des oeuvres, la relation de l'art à la technique, à l'histoire, sa modulation en arts traditionnels et nouveaux, sa position actuelle vis-à-vis de la religion, de la politique et de la littérature. Jean-Luc Nancy est l'un des philosophes les plus importants et les plus écoutés actuellement. Il est l'auteur d'une centaine d'ouvrages traduits en plusieurs langues et lus bien au-delà du lectorat spécialisé, y compris par les amateurs et les professionnels du monde de l'art. Jérôme Lèbre est directeur de programme au Collège international de philosophie où il tient un séminaire régulier articulant art, technique et politique ; il est l'auteur de cinq ouvrages où les questions de l'héritage actuel du romantisme et de la transformation de l'art reviennent constamment, et c'est dans ce contexte qu'il a rencontré Jean-Luc Nancy. Les deux auteurs ont déjà publié ensemble un entretien sur Maurice Blanchot et s'adressent dans celui-ci à tout public intéressé par les arts et leur place dans l'actualité.
