Because of the diffusion enjoyed by the six-volume work of Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, titled «Civitates Orbis Terrarum», this publication had an essential role on the creation and dissemination of stereotypes of urban environments in 16th and early 17th centuries, through its representations of more than 500 cities around the world. Our goal is to achieve a closer approach to the vision of the urban world through the images of this work, but also the text, a part which is often neglected.
Our approach is also based on a comparison between two cities with special attributes due to their coastal locations: Catania (Italy) and Cadiz (Spain).

This research has as its main objectives the analysis of the maritime and insular city understood as a cultural construct and as an anthropized space through its conceptualization through writing in the chorography and in local histories and its visual representation in maps and views, in a chronological framework that covers the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. To do this, we will follow a comparative perspective through which we will seek to approach the image created by chorographers, historians, engravers, artists and painters, of two concrete cities whose maritime and insular features we believe could have been decisive in the process of building said image, conditioning its economic, symbolic and strategic-political reality, as is the case of the cities of Cadiz and Venice. Finally, we would like to rescue and value a work that until now was believed lost and that we now present here with the aim of becoming part of the corpus of the historiography of Cadiz of the 16th and 17th centuries. We refer to the Annals of Antonio Ramírez de Barrientos, whose analysis is included in this thesis, in addition to a complete transcript of the work so that in the future other researchers may have access to a source for the history of the city of Cadiz that until now was in the darkness of oblivion.
