It is an abandoned settlement located in the southern part of the Gebel Zawiye. Its limited size has made it possible for archaeologists/architects to investigate all of its component parts. This first volume, in two parts and a portfolio, is dedicated to the study of the architectural remains, mostly houses but also artisans’ workshops, tombs, an ecclesiastical complex, a hostel and baths. The study of the different occupation phases allows investigators to outline the history of this settlement over more than four centuries, attesting the daily life and development of an entire rural community during Roman and proto-Byzantine times. A graveyard settled on the bedrock was used from the end of the Old Kingdom until the early Roman Period. It belongs to the large ring of cemeteries surrounding the urban area of Psôbthis, ancient chief town of the “Small Oasis”. In the last quarter of the 3rd century AD, military castra were installed over the graves in the incoming area of the caravan routes from the south (Darb el-'Arbayin) and from the northwest (Siwa Oasis). This first volume of the final archaeological reports of the excavations at Qaret el-Toub attempts to identify the nature of the site, to make an assessment of the scientific potential of its archaeological field, and to determine the overall chronology of the history of this oasis fortress, that was built in order to embody locally and to protect the public institutions of the Roman State. As the fort was occupied continuously, from its building under Diocletian and Maximian until the 10th century AD, the sequence of occupation levels which it provides makes it an ideal research field for the study of the transitional period leading from late Antiquity to Arabic times.

Recent studies of fifteen villages on the top of Jabal Zawiya, between Apamene and Antiochene, have shed light on several features of the rural domestic architecture of this area and its development between the 4th and the 6th century A.D. Through an examination of this rural community’s living environment, we aim to highlight material signs linked to a desire for luxury and to identify their cultural reference(s).

Rasm Afandī, an earthen village, is one of the antique settlements whose population considerably increased during the 5th and 6th centuries in the area studied by the mission of the Arid Margins of Northern Syria. The reading of its architectural remains, mostly simple houses, and of their planimetric organization allows to outline some of the original or common aspects of a rural community in this area during the proto‑byzantine times.

Chehab before 1975. These new hypotheses are focusing on the thermal bath sector constituted by a large basilical room and the main bath building linked to two symmetrical palaestrae. The preserved remains were built during the Early Byzantine period (4th-7th century). The monumental bath in this period is almost similar of the Antoninus bath in Carthage. It could belong to the imperial thermal type defined by Krencker. The sector constituted by the latrines and a puzzling rectangular building with rows of seats surrounded by two rows of cisterns is still under investigation.

Village d’Apamène. Tome I : Une architecture de pierre ) led us to link the evolution of a building technic with the growth and the prosperity of a rural settlement. In this new paper, we test the heuristic value of this analysis on twelve others villages in the same area, in the southern part of the limestone hills of Northern Syria. This research was projected with Georges Tate.

The whole area includes over 700 sites built during the Roman and Byzantine periods in a wide region bordered by Turkey in the north, Apamea in the south, the Afrin and Oronte's valleys in the west and the Aleppo's plain in the east. These sites are exceptional not only for their profusion, but also for their rural nature. The recent and detailed study of the well-preserved remains of one of these settlements, Serğilla, located in the ğebel Zāwiye, offered the opportunity to explore various aspects of the daily life of a rural community and its evolution between the fourth and the sixth century.
As the book of "Sergilla, village d'Apamène" aims to detail the complete settlement, this paper focuses on three ordinary houses, among others, built during different phases of the development of the village, which are emblematic of this evolution. [© Antiquité tardive 21, p. 135]

The growing population of this region during this period mainly resulted in the development of villages surrounded by agricultural parcels. We have an image still virtually intact of these rural settlements in some areas, and a description of their development is possible in terms of individual and related growth processes. The evolution of domestic architecture is one of the focuses of these studies. [© Antiquité Tardive 20]

Although largely erodate, these remote settlements, hamlets and villages are in a state close to that of their abandonment. The reading of outcrop remains allows the identification of a stereotyped habitat: mud houses with stone foundations are organized in agglomerations of variable size, but are all designed on a simple scheme in which several contiguous rooms open onto a courtyard. The standardized design undoubtly reflects in type of roofing." [©TMO 55, p. 175]

The purpose of this project is the preservation and understanding of this Fort before it disappears as a result of erosion, due to the desert’s harsh environment. Architectural analysis and sondages conducted during our work have allowed us to date the monument and identify its different periods of occupation. The result of the work has confirmed the previous hypothesis; namely, that this fort underwent extensive rebuilding and reinforcement during the end of the 3 rd Century or beginning of the 4 th Century A.D. The monument was then partially occupied until the 8 th or 9 th Century A.D.; however, it is still uncertain when the army’s departure from the fort took place. [© Bifao107]

[Ph. Quenet]

Scientific documentation of the UMR 7044 ancient Orient archaeological missions benefits from a space specifically dedicated to archiving inside of the MISHA building. A brief inventory of these archives has been undertaken in order to give the researchers a general overview of the collections. Eight missions have been registered. Turkey: Porsuk, Gülnar, "Cities of Lycia" ; Syria: Tell Hariri / Mari, Ramadi, Tell Mashnaqa, Meskéné / Emar and the archaeological French-Syrian mission of Northern Syria. research archives of Jacqueline Pirenne, as well as pedagogic collections can be added to the inventory: glass plates and slides, seal prints and mouldings. Each series represents a particular case of archival management and shows the diversity of forms and mediums. These archaeological archives can be viewed as museum objects and as parts of collections to be enhanced, in order to revisit the datas or trace back the history of archaeology.

As the book of "Sergilla, village d'Apamène" aims to detail the complete settlement, this paper focuses on three ordinary houses, among others, built during different phases of the development of the village, which are emblematic of this evolution.
