Dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in the lower Amazon region (Brazil). How do river-‐‑dwellers of the lower Amazon (Brazil) define who belongs to the family? And how do local learning practices inform kinship dynamics? In this paper, we discuss two transmission processes that both exclude others: the transmission of land and the transmission of knowledge and skills. In adulthood, the unequal transmission of land generates conflicts between siblings and changes the perimeter of what the region’s inhabitants consider to be “family”; during childhood, the systematic exclusion of those who do not master this or that skill forces them to become “knowledge hunters”and to manage to learn on their own. The conflicts and rivalries about inheritance issues that one observes in adulthood emanate from these commonplace childhood practices where a logic of “everyone for himself”prevails, including within the family.

To the ethnologist's surprise, both are affiliated to a Jewish ancestry. And this Judaism, conceived more as an origin than as a religious practice, helps to clarify the link to the land of the present generations. The comparison of these two ethnographic cases allows a wider discussion on the multiplicity of origins in a long-term migratory context. The Jewishness of the origins helps to fully establish the current inscription of the populations within a space marked by the history of Portuguese and Spanish colonization.

----
In the Lower Amazon, Brazil, the so-called engerados are identified old villagers supposed to turn into animals or hybrids at night, as a tribute for having practiced “sinful” incestuous relations during their life time. This paper builds on gossips aiming at denunciating kins or allies for being incestuous. Second-hand stories recount fortuitous encounters between villagers and engerados. In these narratives, the engerados inspire fear and provoke somatic disagreements to anyone at sight, even though no interaction is looked for. In the morning, gossips spread rapidly to speculate and discover who is the engerado, the villager having transgressive sexual practices. In a rural society where incest is quite common, these gossips turn to be powerful tools for defamation in specific social and political contexts.

Cobra Honorato myth is widely spread in the Brazilian Amazon. Although the story may include multiple versions, it is mainly about the adventures of twin children born from the intercourse between a woman and a subaquatic being. As a consequence, Honorato and his sister were born in the shape of giant anaconda snakes. In Santarém rural area (Lower Amazon), this story informs the narratives about the life and trajectory of remarkable people (such as deceased healers). While they recount these stories, the riverine peasants of the Amazon reconstitute a meshwork based on kinship, insisting on its spatial, historical and sociological aspects. I will demonstrate how such actualisations of this specific mythic story attend to micro-sociological issues, and enable us to learn more about historical power and domination relations within the Amazonian dwellers in this region.

In general, a votive mast is cut down on the last day of the novena. In the villages of the Lower Tapajós basin, this ritual is accompanied by a "Negroes’ Farce", portraying with grotesque humour a caricatural family of Blacks. We shall present a structural study of this farce, showing that beneath its entertaining aspects, it is a way of reflecting on the place of the métis peasant in the Amazon region, and of restoring the significance of the Catholic festival, namely the veneration of a local patron saint and a dialogue with the entities safeguarding social reproduction.

This paper proposes an original approach using participatory scenarios as a method that may be able to put in perspective, at different levels of decision-making, a specific action of territorial planning in Pará State, Brazil. The method allows the dialogue between stakeholder representatives, government organizations and communities involved in that territorial process. The scenarios produced substantial and sometimes contradictory data: while they can be considered as a way of empowerment for the local communities, participatory scenarios also have their limits and may reveal structural forms of authority or domination within the project-promoting institutions and local communities. The information collected allows scientists of various areas (Modeling, Social Sciences), community leaders and managers to elaborate a reflection upon the levers that may condition the implementation of effective actions and public policies in territorial units.

Now regarded as the political unit by external actors, it is the privileged interlocutor of many concerned with public policies land tenure and the redistribution of resources. In this article, using the case study of a set of rural communities along the Arapiuns River, in the state of Pará (Brazil), we show the dynamics driven in the genesis of communities’ formation and later in the deliverance of land records by the State, their nesting with local practices of land use and transfer. Social organization based on « residential sibling groups », and mechanisms of exclusion necessary to their reproduction, have found their limits in a legal structure seen as a cyclical confinement. Recent conflicts between residential groups and within families must be understood in the light of a broader crisis of representation and identity of the community.

Intrinsic to it is the assumption that the study groups have the possibility to express their own opinions and continuously on the questions raised and addressed by the study. In this article we discuss some of the implications of this assumption based in our own experience among rural populations in the region of Santarem, Para State, in the Brazilian Amazon. Recently, the State launched a major territorial development project, aiming, among other goals, the regularization of land tenure of certain social groups and the access and control of natural resources. It is in this political context, and among a traditional society that is dominated by factional groups, that we started thinking and questioning the implications of the use of participatory methodologies and its assumptions.
