Moderate hermeneuts, —immoderately, many a time. Culture is, on the other hand, an acummulation of our yearning to decipher signs, musical tradition being no exception. In this art of no originals, the urge to interpret is unavoidable. In every community, the tools and the result of translating any outer sign into everyday language become a worshipped gift, a common good; just as well, for those studying music —either composers, interpreters, musicologists or melomaniacs—, this mutable good, which up to a certain extent may be as intangible as sound itself, has generated all kinds of speculation and contradictory statements. Their only common element is that, as time goes by, they become useless.
