The committee was created at the end of 1989 to replace the SPSC and PSCC Committees. Part of the activities of the latter are since then being treated by the ISOLDE and neutron Time-Of-Flight experiments Committee (INTC). The mandate of the committee is to referee the requests from the experimental teams on the basis of their physics interest and of the availability of the accelerators. Until the end of 1996 the committee (as SPSLC) also handled proposals for LEAR. The SPSC recommendations are sent to the Research Board, which takes the decisions. The SPSC meets 4 times a year.
