Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz (13 August 1926 - 25 November 2016) became head of state in Cuba in 1959, when, leading the 26th of July Movement, he helped overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and turn Cuba into the first Socialist state in the Western Hemisphere. He retired as President of Cuba in February 2008. He held the title of premier until 1976, when he became president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers. He was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from its inception in 1965.
