Mexican American is an all-encompassing term used to refer to individuals in the United States who are of Mexican descent. The term includes Americans of Mexican descent, immigrants from Mexico, and generally all persons residing in the United States who are of full or partial Mexican ancestry. Chicano is a synonymous term, which carries leftist political connotations; it was popularized during the Chicano Movement in the 1960s United States.
