Relevance: TE is a common musculoskeletal condition affecting approximately 1% of the general population. The duration of TE can be up to 48 months even with treatment. The aetiology is not well understood, which is reflected by the multiple clinical treatments currently in use. Recent research suggests a neurophysiological component, evidenced by sensorimotor deficits such as upper limb reaction time and speed of movement in the order of 11-32% compared to healthy controls. However, changes in sensorimotor deficits in reponse to currently accepted treatments have not been assessed. Participants: 198 participants (mean age 47.6; SD 7.8) with a clinical diagnosis of unilateral TE were selected from the general community. Inclusion criteria includ...

The cohort of patients with coarctation of the aorta born between 1983 and 1992. Casual (mean of three resting readings) and 24 hour blood pressure were measured in 119 children and compared with data from 1034 normal controls. The arch repair and left ventricular parameters were assessed using Doppler echocardiography. Median ages at first intervention and at blood pressure measurement were 0.2 years (interquartile range 0.04-2.0) and 12.0 years (9.0-14.5), respectively. Doppler velocity in the descending aorta was significantly associated with blood pressure (r = 0.28, p = 0.002 for casual systolic blood pressure (SBP); r = 0.26, p = 0.005 for mean 24 hour SBP). Patients were classified as having "no" (n = 70) or "mild" (n = 49) arch obstruction. Casual SBP was > 95th centile in 28% (34 of 119) overall and in 21% (15 of 70) of the no arch ...

Data were drawn from the second Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (CDS II), which was conducted over 2002-2003. Fewer than 60% of adolescents were found to accumulate 60 min of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) outside of school hours on week or weekend days. Accumulated duration of MVPA was not, however, significantly associated with severity of depressive symptoms for either gender. Males who were not involved in sporting clubs or lessons were more likely than males who were highly involved to experience greater severity of depressive symptoms (OR = 3.24, CI = 1.33, 7.87). Results highlight gender variability in the psychosocial correlates of sporting participation and prompt further investigation of the relevance of current physical activity guidelin...

It was instigated in response to the publication of Pain Curricula for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in 1994 (1). The first year it was offered, the "People in Pain" course comprised 14 h of lecture content. It was then expanded to encompass 28 h of lectures and seminar involvement. To evaluate the impact of participation in a university pain course that meets the IASP pain curricula guidelines to increase health professional students' knowledge about pain. Students who participated in the People in Pain course over the first three years were invited to complete the Revised Pain Knowledge and Attitudes Questionnaire (R-PKAQ) pre- and postcourse. Data obtained from 22 students in the short cours...
