He was educated at a school of of Persians in Edessa and died in the year 521 C.E. This spiritual writer has written a homily on the Lord’s prayer and the argument of his homily is only properly understood when set against the backdrop of juridical practices in Aramaic-speaking Roman Eparchies. This paper will demonstrate how Jacob of Serug, in his homily on the Lord’s prayer, argues that the Christian summoning the Father in heaven simultaneously professes the annulment of the invalid purchase agreement drafted between Eve and Satan.

Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug’s homilies, this volume contains his homily on the Lord's Prayer. Jacob’s pastoral concern and rhetorical acumen have earned him the title “the lyre of the Holy Spirit”. This volume presents Jacob’s exposition of a passage central to Christian liturgy and piety. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. The volume is one of the fascicles of Gorgias Press’s The Metrical Homilies of Mar Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain all of Jacob’s surviving sermons.

Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug’s homilies, this volume contains his two homilies on the Solitaries. Jacob’s pastoral concern and rhetorical acumen have appropriately earned him the title “the lyre of the Holy Spirit”. This volume presents Jacob's admonitions to those living a life of consecrated singleness to God.

This volume is part of a series of English translations of the Syriac Peshitta along with the Syriac text carried out by an international team of scholars. D. Walter and G. Greenberg have translated the text, while Kiraz has prepared the Syriac text in the west Syriac script, fully vocalized and pointed. The translation and the Syriac text are presented on facing pages so that both can be studied together. All readers are catered for: those wanting to read the text in English, those wanting to improve their grasp of Syriac by reading the original language along with a translation, and those wanting to focus on a fully vocalized Syriac text.
