Among many other climatically vulnerable areas, Chittagong, the port city and business capital of Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to landslide and earthquake hazards. Lack of enforcement by authority, illegal hill cutting, ineffective hill management policy at national level has created scope for developing informal high risk settlement along landslide porn hill slopes in this city. In the draft of Bangladesh National Building Code, the seismic coefficient has been updated from 0.15g to 0.28g (Zone II to Zone III). The historical seismicity data of Chittagong and adjoining area indicates that this area is highly vulnerable to earthquake. Landslides have caused the death of more than 300 people affecting more than a million people in 8 events since 1999 (source- report on Landslide Tragedy by ADPC, 2013). More than 70,000 people are currently living in vulnerable condition at high risk of landslide and earthquake. It is therefore essential to prepare future landslide susceptibility map for Chittagong so that sustainable strategies can be developed to help combat the impacts of climate change. This paper illustrates some historical events of Landslide and present scenario of the community under high risk of Landslide & Earthquake. Through the survey and study, this paper analyse the vulnerability level of existing landslide and earthquake locations and the living condition of this low income community. The analysis of this study makes an effort to contribute in the development of the vulnerable community of Chittagong.
