History is testimony to the fact that different religions have evolved and existed on the face of earth as the human life moved forward. However, in the recent decade, particularly aftermath of 9/11, the bourgeoning conflict, violence, hatred pervasive in the world is often attributed to different ideologies and values associated with religions, Islam with no exception. Therefore, Muslims living as minorities on the both sides of the Atlantic Ocean are in a precarious condition. Besides, the increasing proximity between the individuals of different religions and, more so, of communities due to the miraculous advancements in the technology of communication and transport facilities have resulted into inevitable intercultural interaction and integration more than ever before. Consequently, attempts are being made to explain Islam's compatibility with Western concept of religious pluralism. Islam recognises political, social pluralism rather than religious pluralism per se, which are explicit in the Quran and the prophetic traditions.I n this background, the paper is an attempt to re-explore and re-revisit the concept of pluralism in Islamic sources. It attempts to reconstruct the theme of

However, what has been written on the subject often gives only one side of the story, as the books written so far have often shown little interest towards the people ‒ the Muslims ‒ against whom the Crusades were waged. Filling this gap, the current book attempts to present the Crusades “from the viewpoint of the Muslim people of the Levant,” and aims to provide a supplemental and counterbalancing work to the body of literature that narrates the story of the crusading period from the European point of view, thus “enabling reader[s] to achieve a broader perspective on the period than they might do otherwise” (p. 1). Muslims and Crusaders is comprised of nine chapters, mainly devoted to describing the Muslim response to the Crusades.

The Re-Emergence of the Single State Solution in Palestine/Israel. london and New York: Routledge, 2015. 214 pages.Cherine Hussein, an Egyptian Research Fellow at the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), and the Deputy Director of the CBRL's Kenyon Institute, approaches differently at the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in this book. She inquires into the nature of the single-state alternative as a movement of resistance and investigates its potential to become a counter-hegemonic force against the processes of Zionism. In doing so, according to Hussein, it strives to achieve both to reunite the Palestinian national collective and to bring about a single-state solution to the conflict built upon a vision of coexistence, democracy, and the sharing of the land among all of its inhabitants (pp. 1-2). It comprises of five chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion.Building a theoretical framework (chapter 1) of her thesis, she attempts ...

The review draws on studies, presented in five recent books, conducted by specialists in the area of (Israel-Palestine) Conflict Resolution and International Studies. The question of whether the two-state solution is still feasible has caused much debate in various academic and public spheres over the last decade or so. The studies, conducted both inside and outside of Israel and Palestine, provide ample support that there have been growing dissenting voices and increasing peaceful resistance against the dominant view of the two-statism that divides territory and segregates the indigenous population with its history of harmony and coexistence. Despite their different views, the authors collectively maintain that in the current milieu of deadlock in the peace process, there is an urgent need to rethink and reformulate the two-state solution that perpetua...

(London: Bloomsbury, 2014). During the last six decades, historians have adopted various approaches tostudying the Crusades. Unfortunately, few contemporary Muslim scholarshave dealt with this topic at all. In the aftermath of 9/11, however, this seriesof European military invasions of the Middle East began to reappear in themedia as analysts, historians, and academics posited that they were a precursorof the region’s present sociopolitical disorder as daunting as the current East-West discourse and relations between the Christian and Muslim worlds.1 Someworks deconstruct the perception that there is no connection between them, whereas others view the Crusades from the Islamic perspective in an attemptto balance the general triumphalist w...

The everchangingevents there have perplexed and compelled analysts, political scientists, academics, and activists to devise countless solutions, especially since1948. Moreover, the last decade has witnessed a substantial change in its demographydue to the Separation Wall and the ongoing Jewish settlement inEast Jerusalem, both of which violate international law and agreements. Thephysical barrier is itself a grim reminder of Israel’s harsh unilateral and discriminatorymeasures that seriously impact for the bilateral peace process.Michael Dumper (professor of Middle East politics, University of Exeter)has written extensively on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In this book, he exploresand illustrates how, despite the wall (hard border), people on the bothsides have managed to create and retain various trans-wall spheres of influence(soft borders) by taking advantage of its porous nature to breach it by variousways. ...

It will first investigate the Crusades' impact on the Muslim world and, then accordingly and importantly on the Western Europe visa -vis trade, economy, religion, knowledge, scientific inventions, literature to name a few prominent areas. The Crusade imagery, ideology and symbolism are so much powerful and immense so that it has subsided and undermined the constructive/positive impact the Western Europe achieved by confronting with the Orient/Muslim world. The paper concludes that the Crusades' positive impact and interaction if broadly highlighted and explored, and if given considerable space in public and academic discourses then the possibilities of the East-West tension and hostility could be alleviated to a considerable extent.

This has in turn, provided an open and free atmosphere for many anti-Islamic elements, radical extremists, and prejudiced non-Muslims, to attack and defame the true message of Islam deliberately; and for the common masses' a misunderstanding of the concept of Jihād that they justify by mere referencing to the violent acts committed by certain Muslim groups. The present paper, in this background, attempts to explore and highlight the holistic institution the Jihād encompasses, away from its dominant perception as war or physical fighting. It demonstrates that Jihād has a much broader concept; Jihād is a striving against one's self to eradicate the evil impulses; it signifies to end the corruption, supp...

The subject has crossed academic disciplines because of the availability of the literature in the modern world. That does not necessarily mean that what has been said about the Crusades is completely correct. Moreover, little attention is given to the side against which the Crusades were launched in the Middle Ages, and not much has been written on the Muslim responses to the Crusades. The recent past, however, has produced some interesting research on the medieval Muslim perspective and understanding of the Crusades and Crusaders, as seen and recorded by the Muslim scholars of that period. This essay explores and surveys the existing literature on the Muslim responses to the Crusades.
Muslim responses to the Crusades have been a focus of modern scholarship in both Crusades studies... more Muslim responses to the Crusades have been a focus of modern scholarship in both Crusades studies and medieval Islamic history over the last decade or so. This important aspect of the Crusades had been largely, if not entirely, ignored by Western scholars owing to their particular Western academic environment. One of the common misconceptions about the Muslim understanding of and response to the Crusaders is the view that the Muslims knew little, if anything, about them and were confused about the difference between the Byzantines and the Franks (Crusaders). Consequently, it took the Muslims approximately a half century to organize a unified Muslim front to fight against the Crusaders. Despite this view, Muslim sources reveal that Muslim intellectuals and religious figures closely observed the Crusaders’ actions and motives, and they did, in various ways, respond to this hitherto unimagined flood of people from the West. This paper attempts to highlight and explore the Muslim ideolo...

Reconstructing this moment of re-emergence through primary material and interviews with diverse influential intellectuals—its analysis highlights their self-understandings, worldviews, strategies and perceptions of the phenomenon in which they are involved, while questioning whether the single state idea has the potential to become a Gramscian inspired movement of resistance against Zionism. In presenting this rare insight into a resistance movement in the making, this book resurrects an empowering image of Antonio Gramsci infused with the writings of Edward Said. This it does in an effort to both problematize the dominant interpretations of Gramsci’s writings in International Rela...
