This is against a background of rising expectations, financial constraint as well as changing social, environmental and economic conditions. The pressures that governments across the world face to continue to find new ways of delivering public services has heightened the quest for innovation to be identified, applied and embedded in service delivery [1].

This study looks at innovation starting with a brief history of innovation. It then looks at a sample of the multiple definitions that there are of innovation throughout the literature and from these develops a composite definition. From this composite definition key components such as the creative process and academic models of creativity are looked at. The research then looks at the applicability of innovation through highlighting two studies carried out in England of innovation being applied within a social housing organisation. Through the application by a two dimensional typology of social innovation they had identified innovation being applied to new services and improvements to existing services. The research concludes that innovation can be identified with the creation of a new product or service or an improvement of an existing product or service.

This ideology has introduced market forces to the provision of social housing which has historically been associated with service provision to fulfil a societal need. This paper looks at the experiences of four countries to understand the impact that marketisation has had on the social housing sector within those countries. The countries chosen have got a number of shared historical commonalities although each has evolved within their own context. The countries looked at are: the Netherlands, United States of America (USA), Australia and United Kingdom. It concludes that the impact of marketisation on the social housing sector has been a reduction in the role of the state although this has to be seen within the specific context of each country.

This paper looks at the history of innovation, different academic definitions of what innovation means and different academic models of innovation. It looks at the relationship with creativity which has been highlighted as an important part of the innovation process. The paper then looks at academic studies on the application of innovation within the social housing sector in the United Kingdom. The paper identifies that innovation is either a new product or service or an existing product or service that is improved.

The focus of this research is in the area of disabled adaptations that enable those who have had them carried out within their home to continue to live independently within the community. Such a study is important to informing the debate about the health, housing and social care systems within the UK and contributing to the knowledge about the subject. The research approach adopted in this dissertation is mixed including both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Interviews were carried out with four customers and surveys completed before and after the disabled adaptations were fitted into their homes.
The findings from this research provide evidence that the well-being of an individual can improve following a disabled adaptation being put into their home. The main conclusions from this study are that specific interventions such as disabled adaptations can help improve people’s lives and well-being. There are also impacts upon the wider health, housing and social care systems. This dissertation recommends that further study is carried out to gain a greater understanding of the effectiveness of such interventions, their benefits including costs / savings and those benefits felt by the customer.
