This thesis, called The Relationship between Redemption and Emancipation in the Political Theology of J. B. Metz, concerns the political theology of J. B. Metz. The first part summarizes the influences, which shaped his theological thinking and it presents his concept of political theology. The next part asks a question about the relationship between the ideas of redemption and emancipation in Metz‘s theology. This is based on the interpretation of a chapter from his book, Glaube in Geschichte und Gesellschaft, which concerns the topic. But before the interpretation of Metz’s text, the problems of relationship between the two terms and of their origin are described. The extent of the field of meaning of the term ”emancipation“ is illustrated by the examples of the thinking of Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx and Jürgen Habermas. A large part is dedicated to the figures of the Frankfurt school, Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin, and their specific approach to the idea of emancipation and the Enlightenment tradition. The final thesis rejects the opinion, that the ideas of emancipation and redemption in Metz‘s theology coincide too much and it puts stress on the importance of the term „history of suffering“ for solving this problem of Metz‘s theology.

At the same time, it defends their approach against the criticism voiced by Gregor McLennan. It shows that the postsecular conception of the politics of both authors is not just an attempt to open public space to a wider range of religious and cultural voices. Rather, it is a critique of the way in which political secularism and the ideology of progress are used by the modern state to legitimize the exercise of its own power. Butler and Chakrabarty's postsecular policy is thus based primarily on coalition building against these legitimization frameworks, which opens up the possibility of forming new postsecular political subjects. It illustrates the theoretical approach of both authors with an example of the church sanctuary movement in Germany.

It puts it into the con- text of the empirical or anthropological turn in German practical theology which occurred during the end of the 1960’s and beginning of the 1970’s. It meant aban- doning normative theological concepts as well as focusing on the church, and instead inquired into lived religion and religious subjects in their diversity. Yet, the article demonstrates that Luther stresses above all openness, incompleteness and fragility of the human subject, pursuing a perspective different from that of most representatives of this turn. To conclude, I deduce what Luther’s understanding of subject means when applied to the church and connect it with Czech context.

In the frst part, the article explores the main characteristics of this movement based specifcally on John Milbanks Teology and Social Teory: Beyond secular reason. In the second part, the relationship between Radical Orthodoxy and postmodernism is ana- lyzed. Radical Orthodoxy reacts to the „postsecular turn“ which is connected to the post- modern criticism of modern image of universal human reason. It also applies vastly post- modern analytical tools, but it turns them against postmodern philosophy itself. Te key authors of the movement criticize postmodernity as „nihilistic“ and attempt to create their own ontological concept founded in christian tradition. In the end the criticism of Radical Orthodoxy from the philosophical, theological and political perspective is summed up. In spite of some original Milbanks insights, his attempt to overcome post- modernism is unconvincing. Milbank presents both postmodern philosophy and christian tradition too one-dimensionally, since he aims at presenting his concept of christian metaphysics as the only cure to the postmodern nihilism.
