Jeff Gordon of Hendrick Motorsports won the pole position with a speed of 176.419 miles per hour (283.919 km/h), while Robert Yates Racing's Dale Jarrett won the race. The track had been repaved, and speeds had been reported to have increased by 5 miles per hour (8.0 km/h).
