Healthy volunteers, collagen disease patients and dialysis patients are studied in order to investigate, primarily, the variability among (1) different regions of one individual, (2) the same region among different individuals and (3) skin conditions due to diseases. Considerable differences exist among the skin dielectric properties obtained from different regions of one individual body. Although region dependence is observed, larger variability is found even in the same skin region among individuals.

In this study, solid type, water based gelatin-honey gels were developed which have the electrical characteristics of skin tissue. It was demonstrated that a stable and homogeneous gel, with a relative dielectric constant epsilon ' chosen from desired ranges found in skin, can be made for 200-400 MHz.

To clarify the neural mechanisms of cognitive restructuring, we designed a unique task that replicated psychotherapy during a brain scan. The brain activities of healthy male participants were analysed using functional magnetic resonance imaging. During the brain scan, participants underwent Socratic questioning aimed at cognitive restructuring regarding the necessity of handwashing after using the restroom. The behavioural result indicated that the Socratic questioning effectively decreased the participants' degree of belief (DOB) that they must wash their hands. Alterations in the DOB showed a positive correlation with activity in the left posterior parietal cortex (PPC) while the subject thought about and rated own belief. However, almost all of the PET detectors used in these PET-MRI systems have no depth-of-interaction (DOI) capability. The DOI detector can reduce the parallax error and lead to improvement of the performance. We are developing a new PET-MRI system which consists of four-layer DOI detectors positioned close to the measured object to achieve high spatial resolution and high scanner sensitivity. As a first step, we are investigating influences the PET detector and the MRI system have on each other using a prototype four-layer DOI-PET detector. This prototype detector consists of a lutetium yttrium orthosilicate crystal block and a 4 × 4 multi-pixel photon counter array. Although there is no agreement on the signal origin, the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) effect has figured as one of the most likely sources. In order to investigate possible BOLD and non-BOLD contributions to the signal, DW fMRI was performed on normal volunteers using a sequence with two echo-planar acquisitions after pulsed-gradient spin-echo. Along with the changes to the signal amplitude (ΔS/S) measured at both echo-times, this sequence allowed changes to the transverse relaxation rate (ΔR2) to be estimated for multiple b-values during hypercapnia (HC) and visual stimulation (VS). We converted the k-space which was acquired by conventional phase-encoding schemes from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates and created the projection. The linear interpolation and the sinc interpolation were used in the conversion. The accuracy of the reconstructed image using projection was evaluated by the relative error in comparison with the standard image which was reconstructed by the two-dimensional Fourier transform (2DFT) with conventional Cartesian k-space. The relative error reconstructed both FBP and SIRT from projection with sinc interpolation is 0.013. The aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous dehydrocholic acid (DHCA) was useful t... more The aim of this study was to investigate whether exogenous dehydrocholic acid (DHCA) was useful to enhance the delineation of hepatolithiasis. Our study population comprised 9 patients. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) was acquired before and after the administration of DHCA. Two different MRCP snap-shot techniques were applied: thick-slab two-dimensional (2D) (coronal) single shot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences and multisection thin-slab, 2D (coronal) single shot turbo spin echo T2-weighted sequences with three-dimensional (3D) maximum intensity projection (MIP) post processing. DHCA provided a better visualization of hepatolithiasis in 8 of 9 cases (88.9%). It was suggested that administration of DHCA could enhance the delineation of the hepatolithiasis on MRCP images.

These preliminary studies of dynamic natural abundance 19F-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (19F-M... more These preliminary studies of dynamic natural abundance 19F-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (19F-MRS) on 5-FU based medicines were performed in the human liver using commercial 1.5 T MRI equipment. A single tuned, custom-made circular shape surface coil with a diameter of 15 cm operating at 60 MHz was used for the 19F-MRS study. Localized proton shimming with a whole body coil was performed with adequate volume to include the observing area of the surface coil, and the line width of the water signal was less than 40 Hz. Very different spectroscopic appearance patterns of 5-FU were observed. We examined whether the pharmacokinetics in the liver of orally administered 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluorouracil (HCFU) differ from those of orally administered 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR). This preliminary study suggested the 19F-MRS technique could be a useful method of evaluating in vivo the metabolism of 5-FU based medicines.

The glucose analog fluorine-18 fluorodeoxy-glucose(FDG) and amino acid analog 11C-L-methionine is the most commonly used PET tumor tracer. This time we compare with 1H-CSI and PET in gliomas and metastatic brain tumor with computer-assisted fusion images. We experienced some cases of the brain tumor. One case is metastatic brain tumor after radiation therapy, localized in right parietal hemisphere, with hemorrhage, and slightly accumulated Gd-DTPA in tumors. 11C-methionine PET demonstrates defects in tumors, but slight accumulated surrounding tumors. Accumulation of PET lesion is not elevated choline in CSI, but lactate is accumulated in tumors. Choline signal elevation seen in brain neoprasms, associated with increased cellular proliferation. The VFR of the left and right internal carotid arteries and basilar artery were measured using P-C MRI, and total cerebral blood flow(tCBF) was calculated by summing up the VFR values in three vessels. We investigated the changes in these blood flows as influenced from age, head size, height, weight, body surface area and handedness. Moreover, regional CBF(rCBF) was measured by combining with the single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) of 123I.
