He was a founder of the Metaphysical Society, an organization dedicated to find the intersections of religion and science. Many notable men joined the group with Knowles, including his close friend Lord Tennyson. Knowles designed Tennyson’s grand house, free of charge, and even dedicated The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights to the poet.
