Open Cirrus is a cloud computing testbed that, unlike existing alternatives, federates distributed data centers. It aims to spur innovation in systems and applications research and catalyze development of an open source service stack for the cloud.

Avetisyan et al. describe Open Cirrus, a cloud computing testbed, demonstrating the nature of federated distributed data centers. With a group of partners from academic research and industry (for example, Intel, Yahoo!, and HP), the testbed was designed with system and application innovation in mind. The paper describes how and why the testbed developed into its current form. It includes findings with regard to architectural decisions and cost. The economic models and measurements should be of interest to many of those involved with today's ongoing (and planned) international cloud initiatives. This paper should be of interest to readers who are involved with cloud computing, federated distributed data centers, distributed data management, and cloud computing economic models.
