Reasoning about Uncertain Contexts in Pervasive Computing Environments

Abstract

Pervasive computing environments face the difficult problem of dealing with various kinds of uncertainty. Context-aware systems, in particular, might not be able to identify the current context precisely and thus need infrastructure support for handling uncertainty. This article describes various ways of reasoning about uncertain contexts that are used in Gaia, a prototype pervasive computing infrastructure. Entities in Gaia can use probabilistic logic, fuzzy logic, or Bayesian networks to reason about uncertainty. Gaia's infrastructure helps developers easily build applications that can handle uncertain contexts.
