BingBee, an information kiosk for social enablement in marginalized communities

Published: 09 October 2006 Publication History

Abstract

This paper describes our information kiosk, BingBee that is designed to be deployed in marginalized communities in South Africa to help improve education levels in street kids. It therefore has some novel constraints on it such as being fully contained behind a shop front window. BingBee uses a novel contactless technology to provide direct finger tracking from within a shop front. This paper describes both the tracking technology and the user interface we created for BingBee. It also provides an overview of three areas where BingBee is either currently deployed, or in the process of being deployed.
