Coupling Environmental Affordances with Schematic Meaning: A Matrix for Designing Embodied Interaction in Public Spaces

Published: 21 April 2018 Publication History

Abstract

Building upon the theories of embodied interaction and embodied schemas, this short paper is aimed to formulate a methodological model for designing embodied and meaningful interaction in public spaces. A matrix is developed by consolidating spatial features and embodied schematic meanings. Based on the matrix, we ideate two design ideas, which show that this model provides useful guidance for interaction design in public spaces. The future work will focus on expanding and evaluating the matrix in regard to other schemas and public spaces.
