GuiDance: Wearable Technology Applied to Guided Dance

Published: 29 October 2018 Publication History

Abstract

We propose "GuiDance", a wearable technology application designed to guide users in a leader-follower dance (LFD). Instead of directing attention or movement to get to a certain place, which is the focus of most applications, our guidance will focus on indicating the dance steps, mirroring a LFD. The main goal is to facilitate dancing using wearable technology as a mediator. This work focuses on the guided part of the LFD. A wearable prototype was devised consisting of vibrotactile actuators controlled via a Unity-based interface. Two user studies show that users find our proposal enjoyable, interesting, and that it is possible to guide someone remotely to perform a dance through haptic feedback only.
