Abstract

Enter your Java Garage... where you do your work, not somebody else's. It's where you experiment, escape, tinker, and ultimately succeed.Java Garage is not your typical Java book. If you're tired of monotonous "feature walks" and dull tutorials, put down those other Java books and pick up Java Garage. Java guru Eben Hewitt takes a fresh look at this popular programming language, providing the insight and guidance to turn the regular programmer into a master. The style is straightforward, thought-provoking and occasionally irreverent. You'll learn the best ways to program with everything that matters: J2SE 5.0 classes, inheritance, interfaces, type conversions, event handling, exceptions, file I/O, multithreading, inner classes, Swing, JARs, etc. Hewitt provides real working code and instructions for making usable applications that you can exploit and incorporate into your own personal projects with ease. Need answers quickly? The book also includes FAQs for speedy reference and a glossary on steroids that gives you the context, not just the definition. With Java Garage, you'll learn the best way to create and finish projects with finesse. Think 'zine. Think blog. But, please, do not think of any other Java book you have ever seen.

If you are new to Java programming, and want to learn about its fundamentals and gain in-depth knowledge, then this book is for you. Hewitt purposely uses the word "garage" in the title. Most programming books are written and designed for an office environment, which the author finds boring. His thinking is that a more enjoyable working environment produces much better products. Assuming that an automotive repair shop is such an enjoyable environment, the book uses the garage analogy to justify the most effective and efficient Java programming methods. To further attract readers, while keeping their attention level high, the book uses very friendly language. Most programming languages are hard to understand, with extra confusion thrown in for good measure. This book gives readers all of the basic facts, and then explains the more advanced topics in a way that will be remembered. The 461-page book is heavily focused on object-oriented programming in Java. Some information about user interfaces, runtime, and system usage is also introduced in the book. Some of the highlights of the book are: a title that suits the purpose and content of the book; meaningfully ordered content; an introduction written with a specific audience in mind (advance issues are avoided); and text that is well written and clear. Although this book is written for beginners, the presentation style and the self-explanatory examples could have been used to handle some advanced topics, such as multithreading and database connections. This book is suitable for people with insufficient or no Java knowledge, who want to learn Java with an informal writing style. Online Computing Reviews Service
