Abstract

Howard Hathaway Aiken (Fig. 1) was born 8 March 1900, in Hoboken, NJ, and died 14 March 1973, in St Louis, MO. He grew up in Indianapolis, where he attended Arsenal Technical High School while working 12 hours a night at the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company. Upon graduation he went to work for the Madison (Wisconsin) Gas Company, a position that allowed him to go to the University of Wisconsin. He received his B.A. degree in 1923 and was immediately promoted to chief engineer at Madison Gas.
