Enterprise 2.0 and semantic technologies for open innovation support

Published: 01 June 2010 Publication History

Abstract

In recent years, Web 2.0 has achieved a key role in the Internet community and concepts such as "the wisdom of crowds" have grown in importance in the enterprise context. Companies are adopting this paradigm for their internal processes in the so-called Enterprise 2.0. Semantic technology seems to be essential for its successful adoption with a positive return of investment. On the other hand, the introduction of the Open Innovation model, for which the innovation process should be opened out of the R&D department to all the employees and external actors, requires a technological infrastructure to be supported. In this paper we discuss how the Web 2.0 philosophy and Semantic Technology support Open Innovation and how three big European companies have profited from this new paradigm.

Web 2.0 offers multiple enterprise benefits, as well as challenges. The open innovation model that this paper discusses is connected with semantic technology to show how companies can take advantage of the innovation model across divisions outside of research and development (R&D). It is thus interesting to extrapolate the results to other business cases using Web 2.0 for collaboration. Powered by individual initiatives, innovation creation, and recognition of market opportunities, some companies are more successful than others in implementing the right processes for a fruitful innovation. This paper shows how organizations can support knowledge-intensive business processes, and how Web 2.0 and semantic technologies power innovation through knowledge management. We should, however, make a further distinction across industrial sectors, activity or domain specificity, and usage of information technology (IT) systems. Whereas some corporations rely heavily on their IT business processes, others offer more services such as consulting. All in all, the paper represents a solid evaluation of the new technological tools with regard to new business opportunities and organizational success. Online Computing Reviews Service
