Outcomes in a course in web services and service oriented architecture

Published: 01 May 2012 Publication History

Abstract

Course offerings across curricula in Web Services and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) are highly varied because of the multi-disciplinary nature of this area of study and the size and scope of understanding required for competence. As colleges and universities develop capabilities to present courses in this very large new subject area, questions of expectations for student outcomes must be addressed. This article contains descriptions of findings in the literature, and the structure and outcomes achieved in an offering of a course in Web Services and SOA geared toward upper-level undergraduate Computer Science/Computer Information Systems students. It also contains a description of a composite application named OpenSOALab which is freely downloadable and can be used as a resource in courses on SOA.
