John A. Cross

In the author's words, “This book has a single purpose: to demonstrate the cost-benefit of combining and automating software configuration management and software documentation.” Because the value of integrating and automating Code and Documentation Management (CDM) is unlikely to be controversial, most of the book prescribes ways of working toward this goal. These practical suggestions are dominated by examples and lists of “Recommendations” at the end of each chapter. As a text, the short length of the book allows it to be used as a supplement in a course on documentation or configuration management. However, the author's practical arguments do not contribute to the sort of scientific knowledge base upon which university educators would like to build an authentic software engineering discipline. This book may provide its greatest contribution to software developers who want to obtain some of the benefits of automated CDM and reusable software documentation, without prohibitive initial costs or bureaucracy.
