RAVI: representation for audiovisual interactive applications

Published: 21 March 1988 Publication History

Abstract

Because of the basically heterogeneous and international nature of its exchanges, the world of Telecommunications is very conscious of the need for standardisation. Yet it has to be said that, although with regard to transmission equipment and techniques, standards follow closely on technological progress (the Integrated Service Digital Network is a typical example), in the field of content presentation techniques, there is a vast difference between the degree of sophistication of available medias (sound, photographies, audiovisual) and the applications that can be exchanged in a standardised manner. In fact, the exchange of text is the only stable application (apart from radio and television of course).
