Reviews

John S Griffith

The author's aim is twofold. This text combines a basic introduction to finite difference schemes for partial differential equations with an upper-level graduate course on the theory related to initial value problems. The intended audience is graduate students in applied mathematics, engineering, and the sciences, but the book can usefully be employed as an upper-level undergraduate text, since only knowledge of advanced calculus (together with some mathematical maturity) is assumed. Convergence, consistency, and stability are stressed and a new treatment of accuracy replaces the grab-bag of differing methods that is often used. Omissions, because of lack of space, include nonlinear hyperbolic equations as well as multigrid methods for elliptic equations. The book contains no detailed programs or tables of numerical results, but the many exercises are of the “show that” type and do not need solutions.
