Knowledge Scouts: Reducing Communication Barriers in a Distributed Software Development Project

Published: 04 December 2001 Publication History

Abstract

As a result of globalization, mergers, acquisitions, andscarce skills, software development is increasingly moredistributed.Distribution, however, introduces majorcommunication barriers, including time zone differences, cultural differences, and most project participants have notmet face to face.In this paper, we focus on "knowledgescouts," developers that travel briefly to other sites andreport back to their home base what they discovered andlearned. With a case study we show how knowledge scoutsovercome many communication issues. We propose that theresearch focus should be on the simpler problem of supportingthe small mobile group of developers as a means of addressing the inherent communication obstacles in distributed software projects.
