A Chronic Pain Management e-Health System Through Persuasive Strategies

Published: 21 November 2023 Publication History

Abstract

The topic of pain management systems has been around for years based on existing studies. However, existing approaches are still limited, especially with persuasive technology and user experience (UX) principles in pain management. The electronic health (eHealth) systems and applications focus on influencing and helping its user as much as possible, usability factors regarding their purposes and features are vital to their successful implementation. This study examines the usability and user experience of a web-based application for chronic pain management applying persuasive technology. Relief4U is a web application developed that optimizes the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) for chronic pain management, complying with the standards of the users (physician and patient) for remote patient monitoring. The study used a Persuasive System Design (PSD), with the main persuasive strategies focused on motivation and reinforcement. Relief4U is a pain management system that uses both orthopedic physical therapy and psychological therapy techniques in pain relief through music therapy and body relaxation techniques. This study used System Usability Scale (SUS) and User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) to examine the effectiveness of the web design. The study results showed that the implemented design and persuasive technology successfully assisted in the remote chronic pain management.
