This volume contains the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Semantic Systems, SEMANTiCS 2014, formerly known as I-Semantics. SEMANTiCS is the annual meeting place for professionals who make semantic computing work, and understand its benefits and know its limitations. Every year, SEMANTiCS attracts information managers, IT-architects, software engineers, and researchers, from organizations ranging from NPOs, public administrations to the largest companies in the world.
SEMANTiCS offers a forum for the exchange of the latest scientific results in semantic systems and complements these topics with new research challenges in the area of big data, semantic content engineering, logic programming and Semantic Web technologies. The conference is in its 10th year and has developed into an internationally recognized and professional academic and business event.

Big data analysis and query optimization improve HadoopDB performance
High performance and scalability are two essentials requirements for data analytics systems as the amount of data being collected, stored and processed continue to grow rapidly. In this paper, we propose a new approach based on HadoopDB. Our main goal ...
Quick-and-clean extraction of linked data entities from microblogs
In this paper, we address the problem of finding Named Entities in very large micropost datasets. We propose methods to generate a sample of representative microposts by discovering tweets that are likely to refer to new entities. Our approach is able ...

Nowadays, there are many ongoing researches to construct knowledge bases from unstructured data. This process requires an ontology that includes enough properties to cover the various attributes of knowledge elements. As a huge encyclopedia, Wikipedia ...
Defining expressive access policies for linked data using the ODRL ontology 2.0
Together with the latest efforts in publishing Linked (Open) Data, legal issues around publishing and consuming such data are gaining increased interest. Particular areas of interest include (i) how to define more expressive access policies which go ...
Detecting EPCIS exceptions in linked traceability streams across supply chain business processes
The EPCIS specification provides an event oriented mechanism to record product movement information across stakeholders in supply chain business processes. Besides enabling the sharing of event-based traceability datasets, track and trace ...
Shape expressions: an RDF validation and transformation language
RDF is a graph based data model which is widely used for semantic web and linked data applications. In this paper we describe a Shape Expression definition language which enables RDF validation through the declaration of constraints on the RDF model. ...
A comparison of supervised learning classifiers for link discovery
The detection of links between resources is intrinsic to the vision of the Linked Data Web. Due to the mere size of current knowledge bases, this task is commonly addressed by using tools. In particular, manifold link discovery frameworks have been ...
Exploratory search on topics through different perspectives with DBpedia
A promising scenario for combining linked data and search is exploratory search. During exploratory search, the search objective is ill-defined and favorable to discovery. A common limit of the existing linked data based exploratory search systems is ...
Information content based ranking metric for linked open vocabularies
It is widely accepted that by controlling metadata, it is easier to publish high quality data on the web. Metadata, in the context of Linked Data, refers to vocabularies and ontologies used for describing data. With more and more data published on the ...
Towards an open question answering architecture
Billions of facts pertaining to a multitude of domains are now available on the Web as RDF data. However, accessing this data is still a difficult endeavour for non-expert users. In order to meliorate the access to this data, approaches imposing minimal ...
Towards question answering on statistical linked data
As an increasing amount of statistical data is published as linked data, intuitive ways of satisfying information needs and getting new insights out of the data become more and more important. Question answering systems provide such an intuitive ...

Over the last decade, a growing importance of search engines could be observed. An increasing amount of knowledge is exposed and connected within the Linked Open Data Cloud, which raises users' expectations to be able to search for any information that ...
Expanded citations and projections of concepts
In our recent paper, we proposed a new kind of citations, called the expanded citations, which link scientific papers and concepts from them. The expanded citations are represented in RDF and can be processed by machines. In this paper, we use the ...
Semantics for the music industry: the development of the music business ontology (MBO)
In the paper we show the development of the Music Business Ontology (MBO). The MBO was developed in reaction to problems towards data and communication in the music industry. Based on a qualitative pre-study we analyzed the music industry, its players ...
DataID: towards semantically rich metadata for complex datasets
The constantly growing amount of Linked Open Data (LOD) datasets constitutes the need for rich metadata descriptions, enabling users to discover, understand and process the available data. This metadata is often created, maintained and stored in diverse ...
Representing dataset quality metadata using multi-dimensional views
Data quality is commonly defined as fitness for use. The problem of identifying quality of data is faced by many data consumers. Data publishers often do not have the means to identify quality problems in their data. To make the task for both ...
A comparison of NER tools w.r.t. a domain-specific vocabulary
In this paper we compare several state-of-the-art Linked Data Knowledge Extraction tools, with regard to their ability to recognise entities of a controlled, domain-specific vocabulary. This includes tools that offer APIs as a Service, locally installed ...
Linked music data from global music charts
Accessing data on the Web in order to obtain useful information has been a challenge in the past decade. The technologies of the Semantic Web have enabled the creation of the Linked Data Cloud, as a concrete materialization of the idea to transform the ...
The semantic model editor: efficient data modeling and integration based on OWL ontologies
Semantic Web and Linked Data are widely considered as effective and powerful technologies for integrating heterogeneous data models and data sources. However, there is still a gap between promising research results and prototypes and their practical ...
LD viewer - linked data presentation framework
With the growing interest in publishing data according to the Linked Data principles, it becomes more important to provide intuitive tools for users to view and interact with those resources. The characteristics of Linked Data pose several challenges ...
Semantically faceted navigation with topic pies
Faceted search allows navigating through large collections along different dimensions in order to find relevant objects efficiently. Traditional faceted search systems often suffer from a lack of usability; furthermore facets are often static and ...
SemCCM: course and competence management in learning management systems using semantic web technologies
The knowledge embedded into the Learning Management Systems (LMSs) contains great potential, but currently is not utilized well enough because the learning content is mainly tailored for human understanding and not for computer processing. The courses ...
