Abstract
It is suggested that there are three major determinants of vegetationâcompetition, stress and disturbanceâand that each has invoked a distinct strategy on the part of the flowering plant. A method is described whereby it is possible to distinguish types of herbaceous vegetation by reference to the relative importance of the three strategies in the genotypes of the component species.
