Realistic e-learning system based on mixed reality

Published: 14 December 2009 Publication History

Abstract

Recently, there have been a variety of approaches to raise educational achievement as well as enjoyment of educational contents. As an example of these approaches, some systems, enhancing the learning effect by providing immersive and realistic sense to the users, have been developed to bring additional education effect or amusement in mixed reality field. However, most systems introduced so far may be prototypical or experimental systems, and not sufficiently good enough to be a commercial level system.
This presentation describes an instance of commercial level Realistic E-Learning System based on Mixed Reality. We will introduce the system, a total solution including production and distribution of the realistic contents, comprising the client system, the authoring system, and the LMS (Learning Management System) etc. We will also present a hybrid registration method which can overcome the shortcomings of both fiducial marker tracking and markerless tracking approaches, a robust and efficient method which does not cause visual discomfort and can stabilize the camera pose estimation in real-time. Finally, we will show real world experiments done in school environments.
