Online handwritten character recognition for Malayalam

Published: 26 October 2012 Publication History

Abstract

Handwritten character recognition is conversion of handwritten text to machine readable and editable form. Online character recognition deals with live conversion of characters. Malayalam is a language spoken by millions of people in the state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Pondicherry. It is written mostly in clockwise direction and consists of loops and curves. It is possible that the characters may get disrupted during writing due to several reasons such as fast writings, low pen pressure, etc. Hence, it becomes important to include linking of broken characters as an important task in process of character recognition. This paper proposes an online method for identification of Malayalam handwritten characters and also deals with linking disrupted characters, if any.
