Characteristic-based vehicle recognition for collision detection

Published: 26 November 2012 Publication History

Abstract

This report details the development and testing of a characteristic-based vehicle identification system for a monovision camera. The method described applies a Canny filter and a simple Hough transform to a camera feed. Then, using a projection of the road surface and thresholding with hysteresis, leading vehicles are identified so that the following distance and closing rate can be determined for the purposes of driver assistance. The resulting system achieved an output accuracy of 80% when tested on a video of mixed driving conditions.
