Preece discusses issues surrounding online communities, with an emphasis on empathy as a key ingredient in support groups. The article is informative, with tips for optimal software design of such bulletin board Web sites. Having examined over 100 such groups, the author has formulated some specific design requirements and desirable features for bulletin boards that would enhance their ability to support empathy. Many examples are taken from a bulletin board concerning ACL medical problems, which was used for a random message content analysis. It was found that 76.8 percent of the posts were empathic to some extent. I liked the use of color and graphics, but I would have preferred to be spared the dark geometric shapes that overlay the text in numerous places. Overall, the paper is thoughtful, concise, and interesting. It contains an ample supply of current references, and should appeal to anyone whose interest is piqued by the title.
