The initial implementation of System k (abstract only)

Published: 01 March 1985 Publication History

Abstract

System k is a relational database management system which implements a relationally complete algebraic inquiry language. System k is a dbms “kernel” in that its inputs are in a low-level form, similar to the system calls of an operating system kernel. Thus, the system provides a relational “back end” for the implementation of various user oriented “front end” inquiry languages. Other distinguishing features of System k are that a very general class of updates to views is allowed, and that the security system allows each user to create databases, relations, and views and to control access to these objects by others without the intervention of a central database administrator. The system runs under UNIX* and was designed for small to intermediate size user groups, with the intention of bringing the power of the relational method to such users in a form resembling an ordinary file system. The initial implementation was carried out on a desktop MC68000.
