Camera based beacon tracking: accuracy and applications

Published: 01 July 1996 Publication History

Abstract

Optical beacon tracking (OBT) is gaining importance for real-time object position and orientation sensing. We assess the limits of this method and present both practical and theoretical accuracy figures. The basic geometric relationships for 3, 5, and 6 degrees of freedom trackers are outlined. We propose a search algorithm for inexpensive image processing thereby avoiding any specialized hardware. We show our first experiences with this tracking concept for fish-tank and augmented reality applications.
