Factors Influencing Doctor-Patient Relationship in Online Health Communities: An Empirical Study

Published: 19 March 2021 Publication History

Abstract

Online health communities (OHCs) are recently increasing in popularity as a type of online platform for communication between patients and doctors. These communities not only provide online health services but also potentially alleviate doctor–patient relationships. This study explores the effects of trust, perceived usefulness, and social support in OHCs on the doctor–patient relationship based on social information processing theory. Data are collected from 362 OHCs users. The proposed hypothesis is empirically examined using the structural equation model (SEM). Results show that trust, perceived usefulness, and social support have positive effects on doctor–patient communication, which in turn positively influences doctor–patient relationship. Finally, this study also presents theoretical and practical implications and discusses limitations.
