360 ROI EXPLORATION: REGION OF INTEREST EXPLORATION FOR CACHING IN VR PANORAMIC VIDEO TRANSMISSION

  • Abstract

Edge caching is a proven method to improve the quality of tile-based 360 video streaming services and ensure the user’s viewing experience. However, traditional caching solutions rarely explore 360 video content and users’ behavioral habits, and most of the research focus on modeling and simulation rather than practical deployment and evaluation within the applicable system. In this paper, we explore a region of interest (ROI) by analyzing the dataset about user behaviours from multiple perspectives and improving the spherical DBSCAN algorithm to capture more accurate ROI features. After this, we propose an entropy-weighted cache prioritization strategy based on ROI using the spatial relationship between ROI features and video tiles under CMP projection. To implement the caching strategy, we designed the framework of 360 video transmission based on ROI caching. Under real networks, the proposed ROI-based caching method’s hit ratio can be improved by 57.10 and 13.22 compared with randomCache and greedyCache, respectively. The improvement of delivery delay could reach up to 57.09 and 47.75. At the same time, the transmission delay and response delay can be reduced to nearly 10ms and 30ms, thus effectively ensuring the user’s viewing experience.
